But Purrseus stopped her—the cottony tip of his tail brushed against her bare arms. “What!?” Then, he stared pointedly at a picture of her daughter. Her full lips pursed as she tossed open a window.

Calpurnia didn’t remember flying home. She hadn’t even bothered to put on shoes.

Again and again, Calpurnia reached out to touch Cass. A hand glided across her shoulder. Concerned clucks erupted as she turned Cassandra’s injured hand over in her palms. Fingers brushed her daughter’s arm. All of these things confirmed that her baby girl was here. She was safe. Mummy couldn’t even bring herself to scold the girl for the blanket. Nor did she fight when asked to order a big paper bag of grease.

At the question, violet eyes shifted to Gerry. These last few days had revealed a side of her that people rarely saw. The scared, vulnerable one. “Two days.” And they’d felt like an eternity. She sniffed. Her eyes turned pointedly toward some corny picture above the table. “Gerry was a wreck.” She shared a glance with him.
